Cold Storage in Crete, Nebraska is a "state of the art" cold
storage facility designed as a public storage warehouse with distribution
warehouse capabilities. The primary customer is the Farmland Foods hog
plant located directly across the road from this facility. It has 9,400
pallet spaces of general storage and 360 pallet positions of blast freezing
with a capability of freezing 200,000 lbs per day.
The freezer
has a very narrow aisle layout utilizing turret trucks in a high-density
configuration. Freezer floors are placed "superflat" to accommodate
the turret trucks. A fifty-foot high structure allows product to be
stored in racks six high. Pallets are stored in a two-deep configuration,
which makes every pallet accessible without moving more than one other
pallet. Dedicated pick aisles are located under the racks for "pick-to-pallet"
distribution. This layout eliminates the conflicts between the restocking
operation and the picking operation.
The dock
is designed with vertical storing dock levelers and wide doors that
allow the truck doors to open into the facility.
The refrigeration
system is an ammonia system designed for maximum safety. The compressor
room is completely isolated from the rest of the building. All ammonia
vessels are placed outside and are remote from most employees and the
public. Ammonia piping and valves are located outside of the building
envelope as much as possible.
The freezer
floor is 10-inch reinforced concrete over high-density insulation. Electric
heat tapes controlled by temperature sensors provide under-floor heat.
This provides redundant and easily replaceable temperature control to
prevent frost heaving problems.
Eight blast
freezers each with a capacity of 45 pallets can blast freeze in excess
of 200,000 lbs of product per day.
